CAC is proud to be a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site. The VITA program is a national initiative of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that offers free help to low to moderate income-earners (less than $52,000 in 2013) who need help preparing their tax returns. IRS certified and trained volunteers help prepare basic tax returns and help working families apply tax credits for which they may qualify. CAC is one of many VITA sites in metro-Atlanta. VITA is managed by the United Way, in partnership with the IRS.
At CAC we have about a dozen volunteers trained specifically for the VITA program. In 2013 CAC prepared 350 tax returns for free; saving filers on preparation costs and ensuring they filed correctly. The program is available February - April each year.
Volunteer tax preparers [basic, intermediate or advanced] and intake/screeners, must complete training and certification by January 31. This can be done mostly online. Sign up at online at the United Way of Greater Atlanta.
