VITACAC is a proud to be a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site. The VITA program is a national initiative of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income ($49,000 and below for Tax Season 2011) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. IRS certified and trained volunteers help prepare basic tax returns and help working families with tax credits for which they may qualify. The VITA program in metro Atlanta is managed by the Atlanta Prosperity Campaign, in partnership with the IRS.

At CAC we have about a dozen volunteers trained specifically for the VITA program. In 2011 CAC prepared more than 200 tax returns for free; saving filers on preparation costs and ensuring they filed correctly. The program is available February - April each year.

Volunteer tax preparers [basic, intermediate or advanced] and intake/screeners, must complete training and certification by January 31. This can be done mostly online. Sign up at online at The Atlanta Prosperity Campaign.
